The most important things to think about when growing in a pot are the soil and pot preparation, how much watering is required, how to fertilise and how to prune.
Soil should be prepared with good drainage (e.g. gravel in the pot) to ensure that plant roots don’t rot or die. Watering depends on the temperature – more is required in hot weather. To test if the plant needs water, push the plant aside and stick a finger into the soil up to the second knuckle. If the soil is dry and powdery, then it needs watering. In pots, herbs generally need fertiliser because watering causes nutrients in the soil to leach out. A fertiliser that promotes healthy soil and plant is advised. Dead sprigs should be pruned and the bush should be pruned to ensure plenty of air can get to the whole plant.
